our history
The company was formed in 2001 by Lyn Harris and Martin McSharry.  They had met at an acting course in the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast and when the course had finished they decided to produce a play in the venue.  They choose Strindberg's Miss Julie and staged in the Crescent Arts Centre.
The production proved to be so successful that they formed Rawlife theatre company as a result.
artistic policy
To produce highly innovative, relevant and entertaining theatre encompassing a variety of art forms of high artistic quality to encourage the expansion of theatre audiences in Northern Ireland.  To bring theatre to new audiences by imaginative choice of theme and location.
in other words...

Rawlife aims to encourage and involve a wider theatre audience in Belfast and surrounding areas and on tour throughout Ireland. To provide opportunities to local talented artists and to this end Rawlife holds open auditions.

In today's market the choice of entertainment is more prolific than ever with home cinemas, DVDs, state of the art gaming systems and low budget movies and as such theatre has an uphill struggle to compete. Who can blame a modern audience for looking past theatre? Rawlife recognises the need to hit the ground running directly at their target audience rather than idly casting a net and sitting round waiting. Rawlife achieves its objectives through the following means:

  • removing the formality of the theatre experience by staging shows in night-clubs, pubs and cabaret style environment
  • offering an entire package of evening entertainment pre and post show e.g. post-show night-club DJ set, pre-show wine reception etc.
  • progressive marketing aimed at a modern audience
  • choosing material, which is highly thought provoking and relevant to social climate and issues
  • inclusion in local festivals
  • innovative use of performance space. We use unconventional spaces for performance in order to bring the theatre to the usual frequenters of the space while maintaining a high artistic standard.
